The Island of Oahu is the most popular of the Hawaiian islands and offers many activities and experiences. From stunning beaches and historic sites to vibrant cultural and outdoor adventures, Oahu has it all. In this guide, we’ll explore the 10 things you must do in Oahu, Hawaii to ensure you make the most of your visit.
1. Waikiki Beach
The most popular vacation destination on Oahu, Waikiki Beach is one of the main places to be on the island. This iconic beach is also home to most of the island hotels, restaurants, shopping, and events. We enjoyed walking out of our hotel every morning to the beautiful clear beach full of people sunbathing, swimming, or surfing. Lastly, don’t miss the sunset on the beach promptly at 6:30 p.m. every evening.
2. Pearl Harbor
Pay your respects and immerse yourself in history at Pearl Harbor. Make sure to take time look into the events of December 7, 1941 by visiting the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship. It is free to tour. However, we recommend making a reservation to guarantee entry the day you plan to visit.
3. Hike Diamond Head Crater
Embark on a hike up Diamond Head Crater for breathtaking views of Waikiki and the island’s southeastern coastline. Only a short distance from Waikiki Beach, the hike is approximately 1.6 miles round trip and is considered a moderate hike suitable for most fitness levels. It took us 45 minutes to hike up and down, and we stopped a few times to take in the amazing views and take pictures.
Pro Tip: Make sure to make a reservation before you get this. Since you can only pay online, save yourself time by planning ahead.
4. Polynesian Cultural Center
Discover the rich cultures of the Pacific Islands at the Polynesian Cultural Center. This center is a great way to explore traditional villages with its hands-on activities, exhibits, and luau. We stayed here for well over an hour learning about the different cultures and tribes.
5. Attend a Luau
We could not have a 10 must do list of Oahu, Hawaii and not include attending a luau. Dive into Hawaiian culture and cuisine at one of the many local Luaus. Our favorite is Paradise Cove Luau. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful cove, they offer hula dancing, traditional live Hawaiian music, and a delicious luau buffet with the traditional slow-roasted pig. What we love best is that they give you many opportunities to be a part of the show. Shari loves learning how to hula with the ladies and we both enjoyed taking a canoe ride.
6. North Shore
Make sure to rent a car and venture to Oahu’s North Shore. It’s known as a surfer’s paradise because of its massive winter waves. The drive along the coastline is a magical sight in itself with huge mountain ranges on one side and clear beaches on the other. After a day on the beach, indulge in shrimp from one of the local food trucks for a deliciously unique meal.
7. Waimea Valley
While you have that rental car and on your way to North Shore, take time to visit Waimea Valley. It’s known for its trail into its beautiful botanical gardens and at the end of the trail is the spectacular Waimea Falls. Make sure to bring your bathing suit to take a swim while you are there.
8. Dole Plantation
Satisfy your pineapple cravings at the Dole Plantation, a tropical paradise dedicated to this iconic fruit. This is one of our FAVORITE places to go on the island. Make sure to rent a car and explore the pineapple haven. There is a train that takes you through the pineapple fields and the world’s largest maze. However, we love just trying all of their pineapple-inspired treats for a sweet taste of Oahu’s agricultural heritage.
9. Pali Lookout
Make sure to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Oahu from the Pali Lookout. Perched atop the Pali Highway, this vantage point offers panoramic views of the Windward Coast and the dramatic cliffs of the Koolau Mountains, providing a captivating perspective of the island’s natural grandeur.
10. Aloha Stadium Swap Meet
Looking for a way to save on Hawaiian treasures and souvenirs? If so, then a visit to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is a must on your list. This open-air market is packed (and we do mean packed) with vendors selling all types of items that will fix all budgets. We love getting all of our souvenirs, especially for family and friends, here. You can get souvenirs as low as $1. Also, this is a great way to get some Hawaiian wear. They are open every Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
