Planning a trip to the desert? The Valley of the Sun is one of our favorite places to travel in the country with its beautiful natural sites, delicious food, friendly people, and so much to explore. Here is everything you need to know before going to Phoenix, AZ.
1. Weather
Phoenix is known for its hot, arid climate. Summers can be scorching, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C). Winters are mild and pleasant, making it an ideal time to explore the outdoors.

2. Transportation
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is the city’s major airport, conveniently located near downtown. You can rent a car or use rideshare services, taxis, and public transportation to get around. A car is the most convenient way to explore the region, but Phoenix also has a light rail system and bus services. Walking and biking are options in certain neighborhoods.
3. Accommodation
Phoenix and the surrounding cities offer a wide-range of accommodations, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly options. Popular areas to stay include downtown Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe. We personally enjoyed staying at Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch. It has 10 swimming pools (enough said).
4. Events and Entertainment
There is so much to do in Phoenix. Make sure to explore the Scottsdale’s Entertainment District, Westgate Entertainment District, Scottsdale Fashion Square, and more. Check the local event calendar for festivals, art exhibitions, and cultural celebrations. Westgate is located in Glendale, which is across the street for the Arizona Cardinal Stadium, making it a perfect location for pre and post game celebrations.

5. Outdoor Activities
Phoenix is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Explore nearby hiking trails, take a mountain biking in the desert, or enjoy some golf at one of the many courses. We enjoyed going to Hole in the Rock, which is only 9 miles from downtown Phoenix and is only a 10 minute hike up.

6. Dining
Phoenix’s food scene is diverse and exciting. Try Southwestern and Mexican cuisine, but also sample international flavors. However, do miss out on our favorite restaurant called Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles. It has some of the best fried chicken in the west.

7. Day Trips
Take advantage of Phoenix’s central location by embarking on day trips to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, or the historic town of Prescott.
8. Wildlife
Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife in the area, from hummingbirds to rattlesnakes. Be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are hiking.
9. Sun Protection
With intense desert sun, it’s crucial to protect yourself from UV rays. Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
10. Water Consumption
Stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Carry a water bottle and drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
